New Membrane Design Enables Urea Removal from Dialysate

A 2021 study in Separation and Purification Technology describes the development of a novel mixed matrix membrane capable of removing urea from dialysate solution — offering a key innovation for more sustainable dialysis systems. Urea clearance has traditionally required large fluid volumes and frequent dialysate replacement.

This new membrane integrates functionalized adsorbents into a polymer structure, achieving efficient urea capture while maintaining permeability. The technology opens doors to regenerative dialysate systems, potentially lowering costs and reducing waste in dialysis treatments.
